I have been this whenever i see this year's national day song, and I evaluated it to be bad, here are the reasons...
1) electrico performed the song. They are a rock band for Singapore's sake, not everybody can accomodate to the awkward music orientation of rock. After listening to song a couple of times, I still could not get myself to the least say enjoy the song. It was all sad and uninspiring. I understand the objective is to reach out to the younger generation, but why are the elderly neglected?
2) The lyrics are total nonsense. I understand that it is supposed to be like all nice and politically correct, however seriously the rock band is singing about destiny, moon, stars, and island. The lyrics is comparable to this year's Idol crowning song, all way to gay. The melody is great, the lyrics just doesnt match.
3) The video is really stupid. I don't understand the video at all. It features the Marina barrage, which is like this new thing in Singapore. However i couldnt understand the transition from which it was night time when the video started and it turned afternoon by the end... what does that symbolises. Secondly, why is the frontman of the rockband running like a retard towards the end. I mean like for whole 4 minutes he is singing and he was supposedly to stage a performance of that barrage, but he catwalk for 3.5 minutes and 0.5 minutes to run to the mike?! what does that mean? no sense of urgency?
4) The song is in English. usually when the english version sucks really badly, the chinese version is better. Well this year, it is totally english, and it really sums up the badness of the theme song. And why there isnt a chinese version? is it because they can't translate the lousy english lyrics into chinese? why are the non-english speaking population deprived of the chance to celebrate the NDP with a song?
5)people can't sing the song because of all the weird lyrics and weird melody. what is a theme song when people can't sing along to it. This year's theme song is a complete failure. not only are the lyrics weird, the melody awkwardly low and inconsistent timing, the theme song is just bad and a failure in all.
In conclusion, bring back all those pop singers who have been singing the national day songs.
now, this is what i call good theme song. In 2003, Stefanie took a second time to produce a theme song, and indeed it worked really well although the song not as well publicised as the other years... One United People has got to be the best NDP song since the year Singapore started having one. here are 5 reasons why
1) the lyrics although heavily tagged with the word Singapore, but they are very powerful and not as cheesy as the other years. It was precise and strong, there was no shenanegans of singapore having to battle obstacles, no chasing of moons and stars.
2) the melody and music is really good. It was haooy and cheery throughout the whole song. The best part was when it began, with this strong beat and subsequently the rest are very nice with a lot of Chinese, malay, indian essence in it.
3) the video is very real. there was no cheesy acting, there was nobig groups of people coming together and smiling to the camera. It was all stefani and her learning to dance the line dance, silat, chinese opera and bollywood. It was really nice especially when all the dances came together by the end of the video.
4)It was totally singable, every word has a certain tune to sing to. There was no belting, no tweaking of melody, no screaming, and it is singable at regular person's vocal range. and the portions when the tempo sped up a little, makes the song very catchy and fun to sing to.
5) this was the song that I sang to when I was in Primary school when I had to attend the NDP rehearsal, I really loved it when she came out to sing while the fireworks lit the sky in thousand colours... while i watched, I mouthed the lyrics along with stefani. it was really really good.
I am sure if any other year were to produce a new NDP theme song, it wouldn't reach the beauty and goodness of ONE UNITED PEOPLE. And I really think Home is overrated, I don't think it's that nice at all, still one united people has to be the best NDP song. This NDP, i will be playing this song while electrico sings their disaster song.
